The Race Is On: The Michigan Case

Interview with Mark Brewer,
Chair of the Michigan Democratic Party and President of the Association of State Democratic Chairs

FES: Mr. Brewer, how should the problem of Michigan delegates not being seated in the National Convention be resolved?
Brewer: Well, as chair of the party I will not side with either of the proposals that are made at this point. We are currently trying to reach an agreement with both campaigns, Senator Clinton's and Senator Obama's. Any solution that will include the will of our Democratic voters in Michigan is fine.

FES: If there is another primary election in Michigan, how will it most likely be paid for?
Brewer: If there was another primary, I don't think it should be paid for by tax-payers' money. Most likely the money would come from contributions. Private Funding seems to be the best option.

FES: Will a long, drawn-out race between the candidates weaken the winner in the general election?
Brewer: No, the positives will outweigh the negatives. There are millions of people out there being excited about the process. I'm sure that the ongoing race strengthens both our candidates.

FES: In your opinion, how will the outcome of the elections impact the transatlantic relationship between the US and Germany?
Brewer: Oh, I certainly hope for great improvements. Either with Senator Clinton or with Senator Obama as President, our foreign relations will improve enormously. I expect that to happen with our transatlantic partners in Germany and across the board.
