INTERNATIONAL POLITICAL CURRENTS

The series International Political Currents—A Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Series contributes a European perspective to the discourse on international economic, political, and cultural issues | General Editor: Dieter Dettke. So far, five volumes have been published which are available at bookstores or online.

The Spirit of the Berlin Republic

Volume 5. Edited by Dieter Dettke. New York: Berghahn, 2003, 271 p.

The "Berlin Republic" has become the key concept of post-Cold War Germany and as such has been widely discussed inside as well as outside Germany. Symbolized by the move of the government from Bonn to Berlin it signals all the tangible and intangible changes in Germany's position in the world that have taken place during the 1990s. Well-known German authors, decision-makers, and cultural leaders as well as internationally renowned experts on German affairs contribute to this volume, examining various aspects of the New Germany and its old/new capital, such as history, foreign policy, art, architecture, and culture. In this way, the reader gains a varied but comprehensive picture of Germany after unification, as perceived by its neighbors, friends, and allies.

The Challenge of Globalization for Germany's Social Democracy. A Policy Agenda for the 21st Century

Volume 4. Edited by Dieter Dettke. New York: Berghahn, 1998, 262 p.

"Modell Deutschland", once admired worldwide, has lost much of its shine, due to a number of internal and external factors. This important and timely volume deals with the economic and political pressures and challenges of globalization and is particularly concerned with their effect on social policy, labor markets, environmental policies, and technological change. Distinguished academic experts and leading politicians discuss these problems both from an international perspective and against the background of debates currently going on in Germany.

Multiculturalism in Transit. A German-American Exchange

Volume 3. Edited by Klaus J. Milich and Jeffrey M. Peck. New York: Berghahn, 1998, 290 p.

Multiculturalism is a controversial topic both in the United States and in Germany. This interdisciplinary collection of essays by German scholars in American Studies and American scholars in German Studies analyzes the "other" from this dual perspective and from disciplines such as literary and cultural studies, political science, anthropology, and history. More particularly they examine multiculturalism in terms of national and ethnic identities, as well as gender and race, and look at the disciplines and institutions that produce and legitimize discourses on subjects such as minority literatures, feminism, and the notion of foreignness itself. What becomes clear in this volume is that careful attention must be paid to the particular conditions and varying ideological concepts that shape the term multiculturalism, i.e. the "national" historical, political, social, and institutional contexts in which it appears, circulates, and accrues meaning.

Universities in the Twenty-First Century

Volume 2. Edited by Steven Muller, Providence (RI): Berghahn. 1996, 182 p.

On the eve of the twenty-first century, the United States and Germany face common but also separate challenges that will be met in part by significant activity at the university level. This volume offers views and expert opinions from leading American and German educators and university administrators on the future role of this vital educational and cultural institution in both societies.

Toward a Global Civil Society

Volume 1. Edited by Michael Walzer, Providence (RI): Berghahn. 1995, 341 p.

The demise of Communism has not only affected Eastern Europe but also the countries of the West where a far-reaching examination of political and economic systems has begun. This collection of essays by internationally renowned scholars of political theory form Europe and the United States explores both the concept and the reality of civil society and its institutions.
