Remembering Prof. Norman Birnbaum, Left-Wing Sociologist and Journalist

Norman Birnbaum, July 21, 1926 – January 4, 2019

The Friedrich Ebert Stiftung is deeply saddened by the death of Professor Norman Birnbaum. With the loss of Professor Birnbaum, the transatlantic community has lost an icon and the historic conscience of the post-World War II transatlantic order. His passing is an immeasurable loss for the policy debates and political relations on both sides of the Atlantic. But most of all, it is a loss of a wonderful man and intellectual who passionately fought for progressive policy ideas which have had a positive and lasting impact on our societies.

Prof. Birnbaum was closely linked to the Social Democratic Party and its current and past leaders as well as the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung. For decades, we worked closely on shared policy ideas and initiatives. With our work, the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung is committed to continue honoring the legacy of Professor Birnbaum in the future.
