On the Eve of a US Recession

  Implications for Transatlantic Economic Relations

with Members of the German Parliament and German Trade Union IG-Metall

The US economy is still at risk of recession. A crippled housing market, escalating credit crunch, spiraling inflationary pressures and large macroeconomic imbalances underscore this fear. China, India and Eastern Europe, are advancing and becoming more independent of the US economy. Germany has regained economic strength, yet a recession in the US could take a toll on Europe.

On April 1st, 2008 the Friedrich Ebert Foundation hosted members of the German Parliament as well as the German Metal Workers Union. MPs Ludwig Stiegler and Joachim Poß, of the Industry and Technology Committee and the Budget and Finance Committee, as well as Berthold Huber, President of the German Metal Workers Union (IG Metall), engaged US policy makers Hon. Melissa L. Bean and Hon. Brad Miller, as well as experts in a discussion on the current and future economic relationship between Germany and the US.

Picture: (from left) Amr Hamzawy (Carnegie Endowment), Hisham Melhem (An-Nahar & Al-Arablya TV), Volker Perthes (SWP), and Marina Ottaway (Carnegie Endowment).

The discussion focused on the regional implications of the violent conflict between Israel and the Hezbollah in the summer of 2006. Marina Ottaway pointed out that the war had in fact not changed a lot, and that the only result was a growing insecurity in the region. None of the parties could claim having achieved their initial objectives. Volker Perthes stressed that the war has put an end to the unilateral efforts within the region. Since the year 2000, there has been no multilateral cooperation but only unilateral operations of single actors in the Middle East.  He mentioned Israel’s unilateral withdrawal from the Gaza strip as one example. He called the basis for such actions an “I-don’t-have-a-partner” ideology. Amr Hamzawy emphasized the implications of the war on the Islamic movements in the region, and he considered these religious movements as the clear winners that emerged from the conflict. The war has reinforced the “resistance ideology” as the violent conflict had switched the debate from internal reforms to the notion of opposition.
